Duncan Christopher grew up the wealthy son of a suicidal rock star in Collinsville, Oklahoma. All his life he’s felt destined to follow his late father’s footsteps as a music legend. But like all of the best heroes of Dungeons and Dragons, Duncan faces obstacles. Specifically, he’s not that good. After an introspective fall on the skating rink at his 30th birthday party, Duncan is convinced by his ever-scheming, almost-charming cousin/manager, Charlie, to move to Tulsa and pursue rock stardom. They move in with their jaded uncle, and land a gig right away: a spot in a citywide karaoke competition. Duncan works through his dormant grief over his father’s suicide while singing time-honored karaoke favorites like “Feel Like Making Love,” “Broken Wings,” and “Kiss Me.” The audience loves him for his openness and he advances to the final round, where he faces Simply Irresistible, a karaoke champion who represents all that Duncan will have to let go of to keep his soul.
