Films from Past Years
/ After the Harvest: Fighting Hunger in the CoffeelandsDocumentary Short | Vermont Films | 2011 | 22 min
Director Brian Kimmel
In a recent survey of small-scale coffee farmers in Central and South America, two-thirds said they were hungry for three to eight months of the year. These are “los meses flacos,” or the thin months after the coffee has been harvested and just before the rains begin, when families are forced to eat less or borrow against their future earnings. This film brings the day-to-day challenges of the thin months to life through the voices of coffee farmers themselves, and looks at successful creative projects designed to eliminate this annual period of food insecurity.
