When National Geographic photographer James Balog set out to capture the effects of climate change on the world’s glaciers, he produced one of the most talked about cover stories for the magazine. Compelled by what he’d witnessed, Balog returned, going to the mental, physical and technical extreme to deliver images of glacial events rarely seen by humans. Ultimately Chasing Ice is one of the most important films about climate change since An Inconvenient Truth, and one that demands to be seen in a theater on a big screen. –S.G.

When National Geographic photographer James Balog set out to capture the effects of climate change on the world’s glaciers, he produced one of the most talked-about cover stories for the magazine. Compelled by what he’d witnessed, Balog returned, going to mental, physical and technical extremes to deliver images of rarely seen glacial events. Ultimately, Chasing Ice is one of the most important films about climate change since An Inconvenient Truth, and one that demands to be seen in a theater on a big screen.
Skeptical at the outset, Balog was looking for tangible and irrefutable proof that that would make all the scientific evidence gleaned from ice core studies more accessible to people, like him, who had doubts about the effects of our carbon powered society on climate. This is the story of the future of our planet as it is being written. It is also the fascinating story of the man behind the research. His drive and ambition seem, at times, super human. We are right there with him as we see him put his life in danger to get the shot that will change hearts and minds and stop the arguments surrounding global warming before it is too late. Thanks to James Balog, we bear witness to the fate of the world’s ice, which may also prove to be our own.
Director Jeff Orlowski is also the producer of the Academy Award-winning film, The Cove, another beautifully photographed story of the most dramatic evidence ever visually documented, over time, of our changing climate. Chasing Ice has been earning accolades as it makes its way around the film festival circuit.
